Biographical / Historical

Stephen Jones served as General Counsel of the Oklahoma Chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1970-74. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma College of Law, Class of 1966. In 1964, he was personal assistant to Richard M. Nixon in New York City, and from 1966- 1969 he worked in Washington D.C. with various members of the House and Senate including stints as Special Assistant to Senator Charles Percy, Legislative Assistant to Congressman Donald R. Rumsfeld, and Administrative Assistant to the Honorable Paul Findley of Illinois. He was a member of the United States delegation to the North Atlantic Assembly of NATO in 1968. In 1967 he was legal counsel to Governor Dewey Bartlett. Since 1969 Jones has been engaged in the private practice of law in Enid, Oklahoma.

Jones became General Counsel of the ACLU in 1970 and was one of the few volunteer attorneys for the ACLU in Oklahoma during the turbulent period of political upheaval brought about by domestic dissent against the Vietnam War. Boxes 1 - 8 include materials relating to the ACLU during that period of time and its work in Oklahoma, including the famous prison lawsuit, Battle v. Park Anderson. Jones, as General Counsel of the ACLU in Oklahoma, screened requests for assistance, actively represented the ACLU in lawsuits, and served as the legal counsel to the board.

Boxes 9 - 31 concern Jones' unsuccessful campaigns for Oklahoma State Attorney General in 1974, and for U.S. Congress in 1976 and again in 1980; Jones' participation in the investigations of the Oklahoma Corporation Commission (1990-1993), and the Penn Square Bank (1982-1984); and Jones' representation as legal counsel to Roger Dale Stafford in the Lorenz and Sirloin Stockade murders case.
