Letters, reports, publications, and manuscripts reflecting the history of Oklahoma and of its American Indian tribes and nations, including correspondence (1813–1839) from U.S. government officials concerning policy toward the Indians, especially in regard to the Indian removal, and correspondence (1862) from Confederate Army officer Albert Pike in regard to Confederate States of America policy toward the Indians. Also included in this collection is a group of French colonial documents (1682–1794), along with diaries and journals (1770–1877) of travelers on the American frontier. The collection contains material on a variety of topics; researchers are urged to consult the inventory to determine the full scope of the collection’s contents. Oral history collection. Typescripts of interviews conducted with hundreds of American Indians in Oklahoma regarding the histories and cultures of their respective tribes. Included are accounts of Indian ceremonies, customs, social conditions, philosophies, and standards of living. Members of every tribe resident in Oklahoma were interviewed.

Correspondence of Pitchlynn with prominent citizens and family members in the Choctaw Nation; personal journals (1815) and diary (1828-1832) of Pitchlynn; official reports (1825-1841) of the Choctaw Academy in Kentucky; and Pitchlynn family records (1806-1867). Also includes a signed copy of the articles of surrender and peace negotiated between the Choctaw Nation and the United States at the close of the Civil War, and extensive correspondence reflecting the state of the Choctaw Nation just prior to and during the Civil War years, with special regard to slavery. Correspondence (1920-1994) to and from Te Ata Fisher, along with printed materials (1923-1976) used by Te Ata as resource material for her performances as a storyteller and interpreter of Indian folklore and culture. The collection also includes a scrapbook (1936) of a Scandinavian tour, four scrapbooks concerning Te Ata's life and works, along with some correspondence (1922-1953) and printed material, mostly reprints (1913-1936), relating to Te Ata's husband, Clyde Fisher, a naturalist.
