Minister. A typescript of the Rev. Smith's autobiography (1946) which includes accounts of his experiences in Oklahoma Territory and the origins of Oklahoma place names, as well as stories concerning religion, settlers, cowboys, marshals, the weather, and public opinion regarding the Spanish-American War and the Crazy Snake Rebellion in Indian Territory. The collection also includes a typescript of Smith's biography of James Patrick Major, C.S.A., who held important commands in the Southwest during the Civil War.

Specialized subject files include research materials on historic homes in and around Guthrie and on cemeteries, schools, and churches in Guthrie and Logan County, as well as annual narrative reports of extension work (1935-1961) reporting the activities of African-American 4-H clubs in Logan County.

Legal case files (1913-1982) for litigation handled by Merle G. Smith, and Merle G. Smith, Jr., attorneys at law in Guthrie, Oklahoma. The case files include correspondence between the Smiths and thier clients, as well as related legal documents. The collection also contains memorabilia from Merle G. Smith's student days at the University of Oklahoma, including two felt OU beanie caps (n.d.), one felt armband bearing the letters "SATC" (n.d.), and one dance card for the Freshman Christmas Dance (1919). Also includes 27 reproduction photographs of University of Oklahoma buildings and events, and one piece of correspondence (1919) from Smith regarding freshman activities.
