A photocopy of the autobiography of James Slover, a missionary to the Cherokee Nation during the Civil War, and chaplain of the 1st Regiment, Cherokee Mounted Volunteers, under Stand Watie. The diary includes an account of post-war difficulties in Arkansas due to a depressed economy, race relations and the reconstruction government, and of Slover's subsequent decision to move to California.

Soldier. Correspondence (1866-1868) to and from Reagle regarding personal matters as well as his assignments at Fort Arbuckle, Indian Territory, with descriptions of the Indians of various tribes with whom he came into contact; and Reagles's diary (1864-1867), in which he recorded his experiences as a Union soldier in Virginia during the Civil War and his post-war service with the U.S. 10th Cavalry at Fort Arbuckle. In the diary Reagle recorded prominent Comanche, Choctaw and Chickasaw words and their English translations, a Caddo drinking song, and recipes for "elixirs of life." Of special note are his impressions of the Indians, his history of the Comanches through 1867, and drawing of a Caddo village he visited in 1867. Missionary. A typescript of a diary kept by Mrs. Lilley, the wife of John B. Lilley, a Presbyterian missionary to the Seminole Indians. The diary describes the Lilleys' arrival among the Seminole, the hardships of living in Indian Territory, problems with slaves, friction between the Creeks and the Seminoles, and tensions prior to the Civil War.

O. W. Gilman diary

Soldier. A diary that contains an account by O. W. Gilman regarding his experiences in the Mexican War from May 8, 1847, to December 14, 1847, and diary entries (1855) by Harriet ("Hattie") L. Gilman of Buffalo, New York. Gilman's Mexican War account was most likely written into this book from his original journal within the few years after his return from the war. The war account comprises approximately twenty pages of entries, beginning with Gilman sailing from Fort Hamilton, New York, bound for Texas and Mexico. Gilman gives numerous details of the march, burning sands and scorching heat, including incidents of men who either drown in the Rio Grande or are killed by snipers. Also included are details of the visit to their camp by General Zachary Taylor.
